Description

Public Engagement Matters

‘Public Engagement’ (P.E.) describes the myriad of ways in which the activity and benefits of research can be shared with the public for mutual benefit. For researchers at all levels, P.E. can prove to be an inspirational, rewarding and career enhancing experience but, too often, it is seen purely as a way of disseminating research findings rather than the consultative and collaborative process it can and should be.

In this interactive workshop we will discuss the different forms P.E. can take and what the imperatives are to do it as well as how to get started. Examples and case studies from a range of subject disciplines will be used to illustrate best practice around doing and evidencing the outcomes arising from P.E.. There will also be input from highly experienced LJMU researchers with a strong track record in engaging with their ‘publics’. This session will be valuable to staff interested in improving how they interact with non-academic communities or organisations at various stages of the research life-cycle.

The aims of the session are to:
  • illustrate why public engagement is important, including in relation to research careers, the REF and generating income

  • broaden your perspective on how and when to engage with people and organisations outside of academia

  • expose you to case studies of successful public engagement from across the University

By the end of this workshop you will:
  • be able to articulate a variety of different P.E. approaches and activities

  • understand the potential benefits of getting involved in P.E. and understand how to evidence the outcomes of it

  • reflect on how you can make P.E. work best for you and your career
